Although the EU only possesses 7% of the world’s population, the EU accounts for 20% of total global exports and imports. This labels the EU the world’s largest exporter ($1.952 trillion) and the second largest importer ($1.69 trillion). Although much of this trade is conducted between the EU nations, the European Union’s primary trading partner is the United States, followed by China.

It has clearly been shown that the EU has been economically successful and this achievement may be directly associated with their tremendously friendly business environment. The European Union has abolished trade barriers, established a single market, and in 1995 adopted a common currency, the Euro. Through their business policies the EU boasts a low 7.5% unemployment rate, the third largest labor force (225 million), and has established an outstanding infrastructure that has increased the ease of flow of trade.

The concept of the European Union began in 1951 and has evolved into a global economic and political force that is ever growing and ever increasing in global influence. Let PSD Global direct and guide you to make sure your business ventures take advantage of this increasingly lucrative region.

Highlight of the European Union’s Industries

The European Union has a vast array of successful industries. Well known as one of the world’s largest and most technically advanced regions, the EU has had such tremendous success that the industrial growth rate is expected at 4.1% and many foreign nations are looking to invest. An example of some these successful industries include:

Electricity

The European Union has grown to be the third largest electricity producer, creating 3.078 trillion kWh. Also the EU is the third largest buyer in electricity, consuming 2.901 trillion kWh. These statistics alone show the already established dominance this sector has and it is not surprising that electricity is the fifth of all final energy consumed. It is clear that this is a reputable sector looking for more investors to take part in their success.

Oil

Similar to many of the world’s top powers, oil is the blood that fuels the EU engine. The European Union and its citizens is the second largest consumer of oil with 13.63 million bbl/day, the seventh largest in oil exports (13.63 million bbl/day), the second largest in oil imports (8.613 million bbl/day), and the 25th largest holder of proved oil reserves (5.453 billion bbl). The oil industry has many distinct individual sectors including exploration and production, refining, transportation, and wholesaling and retailing, particularly as transport fuel. Although oil may be seen as an industry trickling downhill, the statistics show that it is still a product that nations depend upon.

Natural Gas

The European Union is one of the world leaders in natural gas. It is the fourth largest producer of natural gas (181.6 billion cu m), the second largest consumer of this resource (487.9 billion cu m), and has the 18th largest reserve of proved natural gas (2.25 trillion cu m). Natural gas is often seen as the fuel of the future and it is clear that the EU is clearly invested in using the potential of this resource to its fullest. Investors/ companies looking to enter should be delighted to see the amount of natural gas consumed and the large amounts that exist within the union.

Motor Vehicles

The EU is the world’s largest producer of motor vehicles. It employs a massive amount of skilled laborers, and is a world leader in developing knowledge and innovation throughout the field. Many of the European nations pride themselves on their motor vehicle sectors and it is clear that it is a flourishing industry.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

Many estimate that the information and communication technology sector may be responsible for half of the European Union’s productivity in recent years. The ICT sector has also accounted for a huge portion of employment and most believe that this rising industry will only continue to soar.

Tourism

The EU is full of beautiful and historic cities, a wide range of different landscapes and it is no surprise that the European Union is a leader in tourism. Tourism compiles more than 5% of the EU’s GDP and the accounts for 1.8 million enterprises which in turn employs 5.2% of the labor force (9.7 million laborers). The Lisbon Treaty understands the importance of tourism and wishes to make strides to make sure this industry continues to prosper.

Chemicals

The Chemicals industry is one of the most prominent and important European Union sectors. It accounts for all the sales of plastics, chemicals and rubbers. Together these sectors generate 3.2 million jobs and have created 60,000 companies. In 2007, the EU amounted to €537 billion which is 30 % of global chemicals sales. There are many European Union organizations such as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) that help to make this industry grow even further.

European Union: Single Market

When the European Union was formed the idea of a single market was born with it. This is a feature of the union that should be highlighted because of the great amount of benefits this gives companies in Europe. Through the single market, free trade exists, and also the freedom of product, labor and capital movement across borders is created. In turn this makes the process of inter-nation trade easy. Through these regulations an extremely business competitive environment with large amounts of potential is created.
